As romantic as the idea of proposing in front of the Eiffel Tower is, there are quite a few things that could be wrong with it. Firstly – you never seem to take into account the sheer volume of people getting in the way and quite possibly spoiling one of the biggest and most important moments of your life. And secondly – how many people do you think will share your engagement story?
Creative men – this one’s for you! We know that you want your proposal to be unique so that you and your soon to be fiancée can remember it for the rest of your lives, but we know that coming up with an original idea is something that’s easier said than done. If you want something a little bit different that you can wow your friends with ten, 20 or even 50 years down the line, then read on. Don’t be one of the crowd when it comes to popping the question, and go for one of these unique and original ideas instead. We challenge you to find someone with the same proposal story…
Put It On Ice!
Who doesn’t enjoy a nice cold drink on a scorching hot day? Turn up the heat on your proposal and book a table at one of her favourite – and fanciest – restaurants. This one takes a bit of preparation – we’re talking a few emails, phone calls and of course a visit to the restaurant prior to your fiancée’s arrival to hand over the engagement ring – but promise it will be worth it in the end.
Have a trusted member of the restaurant staff put the engagement ring in one of the ice cubes trays, and then have them fill it with water. Then, have a trusted waiter deliver the chilled drink with the ring inside on a platter, with a card that says “Will You Marry Me?!” Pretty cool, right? We guarantee tears from all of the diners, not just your new fiancée!
Ps: this is a very Instagrammable proposal, so definitely one to consider if your lady loves a bit of the ‘gram.
Superhero movies are no longer just for the science geeks of the world. Superhero and comic conventions are becoming increasingly more popular these days – how can they not be with the likes of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman and ladies’ fave Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool? So, if you and your Mrs are planning a trip to Comic Con or any similar convention, use the force or any other power you possess to ensure you dress up in matching his and hers costumes. It’s not essential, but it’s an extra nice touch that will make for some truly unforgettable engagement pictures.
As your his and hers costumes will be contest-worthy, ensure you enter the costume contest, as this is where you’ll be making your move. Talk to the people who are running the convention beforehand, and tell them that you are going to be proposing to your girlfriend at the costume contest to ensure a seamless proposal. And who knows, they might have some extra tricks up their sleeve to make it better than ever!
Romantic Flash Mob
If your girlfriend can’t help but well up at a good rom com and also loves being the centre of attention, then this is definitely a proposal idea to consider. And the best part of this is that some of her closest friends can also be involved too, which will only add to the excitement.
Enlist the help of a bunch of her and even your closest and most musically gifted friends to set up a flash mob that will be singing and dancing to her favourite song. Go big and cheesy or soft and romantic – we’ll leave it up to you to make the right choice.
Take her out on a sightseeing trip to a big city, and “accidentally” run into all of your friends, who will start the singing and dancing as soon as they see you. And it goes without saying, but the grand finale of the performance will be your epic marriage proposal. If that isn’t movie magic, then we don’t know what is!
Unleash Your Inner Artist
Do you fancy yourself as a bit of an artist? Do you make your own music? Do you write romantic poetry? Do you paint or sculpt? Artists come in all different shapes, sizes and guises, so whatever your art form, use it as the perfect creative outlet to go hand in hand with your unique and original proposal. Create a work of art that will do the talking for you, and take your girlfriend to a gallery so she can see it unveiled before her very eyes.
You don’t have to be the next Banksy either; if you’re keen on the painting idea, how about a simple canvas with the words “Will you marry me?” on it? Or how about a sculpture of a man holding the engagement ring? Or, for the more musically inclined, a new track which pops the question in the chorus will not only catch her by surprise the first time she hears it, but will be something she can replay again and again. Most people only get to live their proposal once, so having it immortalised in a song or any other piece of art is a truly priceless gift.
Organise a Scavenger Hunt
If you love organising and participating in Easter Egg hunts, then go one step further and organise the mother of all scavenger hunts where the final prize will be, you guessed it, the sparkling engagement ring. It will take a bit of prep, but it will more than likely go down in history and earn you the most boyfriend points you’ve ever earned.
Make clues that relate to your relationship to make it extra nostalgic (read: soppy) and go as big or as small as you like. Did you have your first kiss in a park? Use it! Did you have your first date in a local restaurant? Get the staff involved too to make it more fun and exciting. There is no wrong way to do this, and your girlfriend will adore how much time you’ve spent on the proposal. A scavenger hunt which allows you to visit places that are significant in your relationship is a fool-proof way to guarantee a unique and original proposal.
