Congratulations! You’ve finally reached the point that every new relationship aspires to. You’re ready to make a lifelong commitment, and can’t wait to shout it from the rooftops. You’ve found your soulmate, your best friend and your partner in crime. You finally understand what the poets have been writing about all these years, and you just want to take the next step and start the next chapter of your life with your love. But where on Earth (literally) are you going to go to pop one of the biggest and most important questions of your life?
Getting the setting right is almost as important as choosing the engagement ring, so we know it can be a little daunting. Luckily, we’re here for you, so if you’re after a romantic proposal that your girlfriend will find it impossible to say no to, then read on as we’ve narrowed down some of the most romantic places to pop the question.
The Lake of Love, Bruges
Of course the Lake of Love in Bruges was going to feature on this list – the clue is in the name after all! Enchanting, idyllic, and absolutely a failsafe location for popping the question. The Lake of Love is also known as Minnewater, named after the legend of Minna. Legend has it that the young girl Minna died of heartbreak after falling in love with a boy from a rival tribe and never being able to be with him. If you believe the legend, those who cross the bridge while kissing their loved one will have an eternal, unbreakable love. You can’t ask for a better start to married life, right?
Bow Bridge in Central Park, New York
New York has more than a few stunning places to pop the question, so don’t be surprised to find it again in this list. If you like your adventure, there’s nothing better than hiring some bicycles, taking a romantic bike ride in Central Park, and stopping off at the Bow Bridge. One of the most famous proposal destinations in the world – and for good reason too. It makes for a stunning backdrop to all engagement photos – especially when hit with a particularly glorious sunset. Why else would it be featured time and time again in some of the biggest Hollywood films? (Manhattan, The Way We Were and Keeping the Faith, to name just three.) You can even hire your very own photographer to capture the moment in all its candid glory, or return for a post-proposal photo shoot – anything’s possible! Fifth Avenue and Central Park West can be seen from the bridge, as can the adorable little rowboats underneath. If bike rides aren’t your thing and you’re after something more leisurely, hop on a boat and take in the stunning views of the park; what could possibly be more romantic?
Skaros Rock, Santorini, Greece
If you’re after something tranquil but breath-taking, look no further than Santorini. You can’t really go wrong with Santorini as every single location has its wonders, but a particular hot spot is Skaros Rock, which can be found after a brief – albeit sometimes steep, but totally worth it – walk. You’ll be met with stunning and totally Instagram-worthy views of the unmistakable Greek blue and white buildings, the perfect backdrop for asking the important question. Our tip is to make the trek in time for the sunrise or the sunset, just for those extra special pictures that will no doubt last a lifetime.
The Penthouse at the Four Seasons Hotel George V, Paris, France
If your girlfriend is obsessed with Paris – the city of light and love – and has a particular fondness of the Eiffel Tower, by all means take her to the top of the Eiffel Tower and get down on one knee. She’ll never forget it! She may have even dropped some not-so-subtle hints over the course of your relationship, so who are we/you to argue? If, however, she hasn’t explicitly made her Eiffel Tower proposal wishes known, we would boldly suggest renting The Penthouse at the Four Seasons Hotel George V instead. Make her feel like the ultimate Queen in the luxurious setting, with an unrivalled view of the Eiffel Tower. Perfect if you want a more peaceful and intimate setting without the chaos of tourists.
Under the Northern Lights, Iceland
One of the natural Wonders of the World, experiencing the Northern Lights is definitely something you need to do at least once in your life. Is there anything more romantic than sitting under them with the love of your life? Actually there is – and that’s proposing under them! As long as you plan your trip to Iceland accordingly, there’s no reason why would ultra-romantic proposal won’t work. We would recommend going between September and April to make the most of the clear skies, which gives you more chance of seeing them. Popping the question here is obviously quite popular, so tour guides are always more than happy to help you find the perfect location without letting the secret out.
Top of the Rock, Rockerfeller Centre, New York
See, we told you New York would feature again! As long as you or your partner aren’t afraid of heights, The Rockefeller Centre might be one of the most romantic destinations in the world. While the Empire State Building is also a big hit with those wanting to propose somewhere with sensational views, The Rockefeller Centre offers the view of the actual Empire State Building – as well as the rest of the stunning New York skyline – so it’s a no brainer. Plus, who can resist the association of giving your love her “rock” on Top of the Rock? The wedding speech practically writes itself!
Old Quebec, Canada
As long as you’re not being inconvenienced by travel disruptions, snow can be pretty romantic. Walking in a winter wonderland, and all that. Plan your holiday to Old Quebec in the coldest winter months and you’ll be able to guarantee a snowy, cosy, romantic winter wonderland. Snow angels, hot cocoa, and an unforgettable proposal with a snowy white backdrop – how can anyone refuse? Potential proposal locations include the Ice Hotel, or on a nice quiet spot on the picturesque cobblestone streets. Extra brownie points if you pop the question at Christmas – can you imagine anything more magical?!
Ithaa Undersea Restaurant, Maldives
For all nature and sealife lovers, the Ithaa Undersea Restaurant in The Maldives is a once in a lifetime, out of this world experience – which is also something a marriage proposal should be, so it makes perfect sense to put two and two together for one of the best days of her life. The restaurant is an astounding 16 feet below the surface, and gives you the opportunity to witness the sea creatures in their natural environment in exceptionally close detail. No need to be an expert swimmer or scuba diver – your soon-to-be fiancée would also be thrilled to put on her finest attire for the occasion, instead of swimwear or Scuba-gear. And the best part of proposing in The Maldives is the week-long vacation in one of the most luxurious and romantic places in the world – there’s a reason The Maldives is one of the top destinations for honeymooners. Just look at it!
