A Guide To Diamond Clarity

Searching for the right diamond to impress your future wife will mean that you need to choose a diamond that is clear, and will display the workmanship of your engagement ring in all the glory it deserves. Considered to be one of the “four C's”of diamond buying, having a clear diamond will ensure that the cut you get will be worth every penny. This guide will tell you a little bit of the clarity ratings that diamonds have.

  • I1,I2,I3These are the lowest clarity ratings that a diamond can have, and they are generally not found for sale. They have imperfections that are visible to the naked eye, as well as at 10 times magnification. I stands for Imperfect (or Included). The higher the number, the worse the imperfections are.
  • SI1-SI2 – These are the next step up from the I's, but unlike the lowest grades, they will not have inclusions that are visible to your eyes. However, under close (10 times) magnification, it's pretty easy to spot imperfections and clouding. It will affect the full sparkle of your ring, but it won't be too bad.
  • VS1-VS2 – VS ratings are generally considered to be engagement ring material. It is possible to find imperfections with these ratings, but it will take a little bit of effort.
  • VVS1-VVS2 – By this rating level, you are getting to the point where you will need to have a professional gemologist in order to find any imperfections or inclusions in your engagement ring gems. They can still be found under 10x magnification, but with a LOT of effort.
  • IF – Internally Flawless gems are very rare. These gems have no flaws, zero, inside their gemstones. They are very rare to find, and IF diamond rings are definitely heirloom quality gems.
  • F – F, unlike in grade school, is the highest possible clarity rating you can get. Flawless gems are incredibly rare, and will cost a lot of money if you can find one. They are the perfect gem in the eyes of jewelers, and it's going to be very difficult to top a flawless solitaire ring!

Don't feel discouraged if you can only afford an SI diamond. The important thing to remember in these situations is that it's the thought that counts, and the symbol of a diamond will always be flawless. Why wait another minute? Start browsing rings in your budget right now!
